Hospice Lotteries Association Officers

Garth Caswell - Chair

Garth Caswell is the Commercial Manager at Ty Hafan Children's Hospice in Barry, South Wales responsible for a chain of 16 charity shops and the lottery. He joined the HLA in 2002 and became Chair in December 2004.

Ty Hafan lottery has over 37,500 members, 17,500 of them cash collections,and started in 1998.

Garth is also a Director of the Lotteries Council and represents
the HLA on Income Generation Reference Group (IGRG previously PROMARK) of Help the Hospices.

Richard Simmonite - Vice Chair

Richard Simmonite is the Commercial Manager for St Giles Hospice Lottery near Lichfield in Staffordshire. The lottery started life in 1997 to provide a regular and sustainable income to St Giles Hospice. Richard joined the lottery in 2003 and took it to an annual profit of £1million per annum and has maintained a playing membership over 30,000 per week. Over 12 years the lottery has given over £2million in prizes, to over 150,000 people and raised over £9million for St Giles Hospice. Richard has been the Vice Chair of the HLA since 2007.


Colin Martindale -Treasurer

Colin is Lottery Manager/Promoter at Katharine House Hospice in Stafford. He started up their lottery back in 1997, and they have around 10,000 regular players made up of 70% who pay direct and 30% who pay at the door. They hold an annual Christmas Special draw called the Snowball and sell one-off tickets throughout the year from 2 portable lottery kiosks.

Katharine House has been a member of the HLA since its formation, and Colin has been the Association's first and only Treasurer to date.

Chris Crabtree - Secretary

Chris has been Lottery Manager at Willow Wood Hospice since 2000.  They have 9,500 members approximately half of which pay by cash collection.  She has carried out a couple of very successful Superdraws for special anniversaries of the lottery, using the lottery software, but doesn't tent to do annual special draws.  Single tickets are regularly sold through the Hospice shops where lottery members can also pay their subscriptions if they miss their collector.
