Responsible Gambling
Members of the Hospice Lotteries Association (HLA) are committed
to using lotteries to raise important and vital funds for hospices
in a responsible way.
The HLA recognises that whilst the risk of 'problem gambling' associated
with hospice lotteries is extremely small, there may be circumstances
that arise whereby players or their families may wish to discuss gambling
related problems with specialist support advisers.
The HLA therefore financially supports the work of the GReaT Foundation which provides such support.
The GREaT Foundation, formerly known as the Responsibility in Gambling Trust (RIGT), was established as a charity in 2002 as Britain’s largest funding body responsible for tackling problem gambling through the funding of research, education and treatment from voluntary donations.
In June 2009, following numerous discussions, the Sports Minister announced that the voluntary funding system would remain in place to help problem gamblers on the condition that a minimum of £5million is raised for each of the following three years.
Since then, it has been very encouraging to see the response so far from the Gambling Industry generally. However, there is still a long way to go in order to reach our 2009/10 fundraising target. Therefore, in addition to receiving voluntary funding from gambling licence holders, The GREaT Foundation also seeks to obtain donations from all others that make an income from gambling including the finance, media and professional services industries.
